DESCRIPTION OF ADULT BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY SERVICES:
BENL will increase native language literacy levels of at least 80% of non literate/low literate Haitian Creole speakers measured by Native Language Literacy Screening Device (NYSED) and teacher-generated assessments and increase English language literacy to achieve educational gain o at least point score requirements for Beginning Literacy Level o ESOL using the Best Plus Test. In ESOL, 80% of students will demonstrate gains as measured by BEST Plus Test. 100% of ESOL students referred to take the GED Test in French will pass the proficiency test. In the GED Test Preparation in English, at least 75% of students in Adult Secondary High Level will be referred to take the Official Practice Test and 75% of those who are referred to take the GED Test will earn a NYS High School Equivalency Diploma.
To meet these goals KNL will implement the following strategies:
Comprehensive Needs Analysis: Bilingual staff conducts a comprehensive needs assessment using standardized oral and written assessment tools. Student placement is determined carefully based on measurable skills of language proficiency (English and native language). The oral questionnaire prompts students to reflect on individual learning styles, learning strategies, language needs, learning enjoyment, motivation, language strengths and weaknesses.
Basic Education in the Native Language (BENL):
Twenty (20) learners, who possess little or no development of non-English mother tongues, including Haitian Creole speakers, will receive three (3) hours per week of Basic Literacy in Haitian Creole and three (3) hours per week of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Texts used may include: An aprann otograf Kreyol la, Rat se Zenglendo, Koute pale li ekri; KiJan pou nou montre granmoun li. The Native Language Literacy Screening Device (NYSED) and teacher generated assessments are used to identify baseline skills and progress.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL):
Forty (40) students will receive six (6) hours of Level 1 (Beginning Literacy) and six (6) hours for Level II (Low Beginning); totaling twelve (12) hours of ESOL instruction per week. Levels are assessed using BEST Plus Test. ESL books are Turning Points, Selections for Developing English Language Skills, Practical English.
General Educational Development (GED) -Test Preparation in English:
Forty (40) students who score between 9.0 and 12.0 on the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) will receive eight (8) hours per week of GED Test preparation. The GED may be tested in French or English and ESOL in English.
