ONGOING PROGRAMS

HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE

Haitian has moved to America to improve their lives. Many parents do not have the amount of time to help their children with their schoolwork. Most parents work 24/7 to provide for their family. By the time parents gets home from work they are too tired to discuss their schoolwork so they youth are left with arduous work to complete.

Many parents within the Haitian community have significant language barriers. Therefore, they do not have the opportunity o help their children with schoolwork. The center’s after school and homework program provides culturally assistance is critical to academic success and helps out many youth within our community improve difficulties in subjects.

Having a community with after school homework assistance is a better opportunity for students who are not doing so well in their subjects. This shows them that, yes there are other ways to improve with your schoolwork and not to give up hope. The program helps youth do there more often.

CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE TRAINING

The CNA program is a New York State-approved program that is designed to prepare students to take the state CNA exam to become Certified Nurse’s Aides. The CNA Prep program offers such courses as Anatomy and Physiology (50hrs), Fundamentals of Patient Care (50hrs), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (10hrs). It includes a five (5) hour Job Readiness Seminar and thirty (30) hours of Long Term Care Clinical Rotation. Rockland Community College will provide instruction for the Language Systems course and EOC will provide the can instruction. Tomorrow’s workplace will provide the Job Readiness Seminar.

THE VESOL CNA PROGRAM
is a CNA program with language support for adults who are non-native English speakers. It is designed to increase the English proficiency level of CNA students and to prepare them to take the can certification exam. The Program includes two courses: Language Systems for Health Occupations and VESOL Certification Prep. Language Systems is intended as a Vocational ESOL instructional support component for limited English Proficient students, as well as a developmental skills course for non-native fluent English speakers who have educational gaps in both their native language and in English n order for them to successfully complete the can training program. VESOL Certification Prep focuses on test-taking strategies as a means f sharpening the students’ test-taking skills in preparation for the certification exam.

The CNA Prep program is a multi-level pre-vocational ESOL program designed to teach basic English skills to limited English proficient adults, who are interested in training as CNA. It provides students with the vocabulary related to the field of health, as well as information needed to get along in everyday life situations. The course emphasizes reading/vocabulary, grammar/writing, listening/speaking (communication) skills and study and test-taking skills. Students will be assessed every ten weeks for academic progress and will be advanced to higher level courses within CNA Prep until such time that they acquire the minimum skills required to enter the CNA Program. Classes will be held in the day and evening. The prep program will be taught by RCC teachers, following the curriculum provided by EOC.


COMPUTER LITERACY
The center has introduced basic computer skills, word processing and data entries to families that do not have local access to local computers in the area. Technology has improved life in general, that is why it is very important to have knowledge about computers. We as Haitians have to help encourage our youth and parents. Offering computer literacy could help the youth and parents succeed. Computers are very important and we cannot stress how important that is.

LITERACY
Literacy is a problem worldwide and Rockland is no exception. In formal estimates of literacy among Haitians are as high as 75 to 80 percent. Therefore we have classes to teach young adults how to read and write in English. Literacy provides opportunities in both academic and employment situations.

In our society today there are numerous individuals that may be on a rapid decline. Many individuals are rapid to blame television that corrupts the mind of the youth. Well for others they insist that there education system is not demanding enough literacy, such as reading programs, are even back to the basic reading, writing and arithmetic.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS
As a fast growing non-English speaking immigrant group, it is critical to expand center programs and classroom space to provide services in the neighborhood. Many individuals in the community today, who are ready to speak, hear, read, and write English are basically prepared to learn. Schools nationwide are advancing their English language at a faster pace ever since the law has passes in which favored immersion English as the main teaching method. Immersion English is a method designed to give students learning English an intense only one-year experience learning this new language. Also this program provides a good opportunity for individuals to improve their English skills and more advanced level. This program also includes general listening, speaking, reading and as well writing skills which can help you in general social skills, further study, and employment contexts.

SUMMER READDING PROGRAM
The summer reading program is more than a motivational retreat it helps the youth in many ways such as, getting better grades, living up to there full potential, being happier, become more self-motivated, built self-esteem, score higher on test, reduce there study time, and to get along with family members, teachers and friends. Having a summer reading faster with greater comprehension, write more quicker and powerfully, taking better notes memorizing as in vocabulary wise such as important history dates and to also prepare for the SAT, PSAT, and ACT. Becoming more self-motivated helps discover more life skills. The program can help increase there motivation 68%, improve grades 73%, increase confidence 81%, and increase self esteem 84% so having the summer reading program can help the youth to be successful in the future. 

Konbit Neg Lakay Traveling Soccer Association

Konbit Neg Lakay Soccer Association Traveling Soccer program exists to serve the needs and interests of its present and future soccer players by providing an opportunity to improve their skills in order to play and achieve success at the highest levels. Our program focuses on cooperation, skill development, fitness, discipline, and hard work to provide a positive experience for as many competitive players as possible on Konbit Neg Lakay Soccer Association teams. We offer and encourage coaches to have some basic or advanced licensing requirements to help develop players and team skills. We want to advance as many teams to the highest level possible in the New York and New Jersey Youth Soccer Association. Most importantly, we provide an environment that promotes fun, teamwork, dedication and good sportsmanship.
Konbit Nèg Lakay in collaboration with the Spring Valley Park and recreation Department which is a 501© (3) organization will overseas the entire program. Due to many cases of youth delinquency in the Village of Spring Valley our sport  programs will help to keep the youth of the Spring Valley areas off drugs and Gangs related activities.
In Spring Valley, between 3,000 to 6,000 youths between the ages of 8 to 18 have extremely limited options for positive activity during non-school hours and on weekends.  By putting together these sports programs, we will be able to offer alternatives to antisocial activities and involvement with drugs and gangs.
The KNL Rockland Soccer Association is a healthy activity for both, boys and girls with a positive message to keep them away from drugs and gangs related activities.
